The HeartKids-Drakes Supermarkets Scholarships are available to children with congenital or childhood acquired heart disease (CHD), living in South Australia and Queensland, where Drakes Supermarkets are located. These scholarships are to help further develop skills or talents, allowing you to achieve your full potential and to follow your life aspirations.
About the program
Individual scholarships will be awarded to successful applicants across SA & Qld, ranging from $1,000 to a maximum of $5,000 per application. Only one application per applicant, per year. The total amount available to be awarded is $40,000.
Applications are accepted for children and young adults between the ages of 10 to 24 who have congenital, or childhood acquired heart disease. The scholarships focus areas include the Arts, Sport, Science and Education / Business.
The scholarships are not to cover standard fees or tuition, but additional training, equipment, excursions, camps or other, that will assist the applicant to achieve their full potential and aspirations in their chosen fields.

Items funded can include:
- Equipment (e.g. art supplies, sports wheelchairs, sporting equipment, musical instruments, technology)
- Tuition for specialist courses/training (including intensive programs/summer school programs)
- Competition, Entry, or Audition Fees (that will provide a new opportunity to achieve your goals)
- Travel Costs
- Cost of skilled-based courses (e.g. advanced art classes, skills development sport or science camps, or business/education conferences or specific skills training like programs or forklift driving etc.)
Note: Scholarships do not cover ongoing funding (repairs and maintenance), salaries, research, carer’s expenses, general and cash donations, retrospective funding, or standard school/tutoring fees.

Scholarships are available in the following areas:
Arts
- Visual Arts (e.g. drawing, painting, sculpture, crafts, photography)
- Performing arts (e.g. music/instruments, singing, dancing, musical theatre/acting).
Sport
- Sports (e.g. basketball, athletics, tennis, swimming, golf, football, wheelchair or paralympic sports
Science
- University-based science conferences
- Specialised education/tutoring or field trips
- Mentoring activities with scientists or health professionals.
Education/ Business
- Extracurricular tuition for academic pursuits (e.g., maths, physics, information technology)
- Specialist education courses/tertiary study
- Business
- Traineeships/ Apprenticeships
Applications for those between 10 and 17 years old need to be completed by the parent or guardian.
Meet Matilda
Our heart kids show great determination and passion when it comes to beating the odds, but this isn’t limited to their heart conditions.
Matilda is a young girl with a passion for ballet. She dreams of dancing on stage with Queensland’s premier youth ballet company, Ballet Theatre Queensland, and hopes to be invited back to audition for the Queensland Ballet in 2022.
Matilda has studied ballet since the age of 2, she is currently working towards her Intermediate Foundation exam and enjoyed performing in her first ever ballet production of Peter and the Wolf in 2021. In 2021 Matilda was given the opportunity to audition for Ballet Theatre Queensland and for the 2021 season of The Nutcracker with Queensland Ballet.
The HeartKids-Drakes Supermarkets Scholarships are to support children like Matilda to pursue their passions and reach their full potential.

Application Check-List
Before starting your application check that you have the following information:
- Covering letter outlining your skills/talent area, your reasons for applying, what you would use the funding to support.
- Two letters of support from coaches, teachers, or other, outlining your aptitude in this area and how the course, camp, equipment, etc would assist you in reaching your goals.
- Quotes or documented evidence of funding that is required.
- A copy of recent utilities or other documentation confirming your current name and address.
Terms and Conditions
1. Applications may be made on behalf of an individual child between the ages of 10 to 24, who have experienced congenital or childhood acquired heart disease. The child must display an existing talent or commitment in the areas of the arts, business, sport, science, and education
2. Applications must be made on behalf of children or by young adults who are permanent residents of South Australia and Queensland.
3. Scholarship Grants of $1,000.00 upwards will be considered but limited to $5,000 per year, per application. Only one application, per applicant, per year.
4. Scholarships do not cover ongoing funding (repairs and maintenance), salaries, research, carer’s expenses, general and cash donations, retrospective funding, or standard school/tutoring fees.
5. Scholarships are only awarded on the basis of merit. HeartKids and Drakes reserve the right to close the Scholarship Application round without choosing a successful Grant recipient, as deemed appropriate by the Grants Committee.
6. The Scholarship Application form must be fully completed, and the following information must be attached to each Application:
a) One copy of a recent notice or document that includes your name and address (e.g., copy of drivers’ licence, vehicle registration, electricity bill, phone bill, rates notice, bank or credit card statement – select only one document).
b) Two supporting letters from professional sources (e.g., coach, educator, doctor, social worker, or other professionals) stating why the Scholarship would be of benefit to the child and why the child is worthy of the Scholarship. The letter might also mention how the child has demonstrated a commitment to their chosen area of interest; the child’s diagnosis (for children with a disability or special needs); or any achievements thus far.
c) Documented evidence of the funding required. For example, printouts/quotes for competition entry fees, tuition costs, equipment costs. Where possible, two quotes should be attached for each request for funding. The quotes must be less than two months old and include GST and freight charges, if applicable. The two-quote rule can be varied if: · The child’s family is in a remote area and there is only one supplier nearby. · There is only one supplier of the goods, course or training required. · When all other things are equal, and only the price is affected, HeartKids and Drakes will only pay for the most competitive of the quotes presented.
7. For the area of interest that requires funding, evidence of any achievements and commitment to the chosen area should be demonstrated in writing (as per the application form).
8. Scholarship applications will be forwarded to the HeartKids-Drakes Grants Committee for careful consideration and decision.
9. If further information or clarification is required regarding a child’s Scholarship Application, the parent/guardian will be contacted by HeartKids staff.
10. If the Application is approved, funds will be paid directly to the supplier on receipt of its invoice. No payment will be made directly to the child or family, nor will cash payments be made.
11. If the scholarship is awarded for the purchase of equipment, when the equipment is delivered, the ownership is transferred directly from the supplier to the child or family. As HeartKids and Drakes is not the owner of the equipment, it is not liable for any ongoing maintenance or insurance.
12. Equipment and services granted cannot be varied without the prior consent of the Committee.
13. HeartKids and Drakes will acknowledge receipt of your Scholarship Application by email or letter. If further information is required from you, a HeartKids representative will contact you in due course.
14. All Applications are assessed by an independent Grants Committee, which usually meets at the beginning of every month. The HeartKids and Drakes Committee will try to assess all applications quickly, however some requests may take between eight to twelve weeks for a decision to be made.
15. Successful Scholarships will be awarded at a luncheon ceremony.
16. For successful applicants, HeartKids and Drakes requests that the child’s parent/guardian provide at least two updates of the child’s progress within six to 12 months after receiving Scholarship Grant funding.
